Hoquiam’s News – A love affair with Newspapers
The steady growth of a town can be told on the number of publications being offered to its residents with much of the content being local news or events that cater to the immediate information needs of the local residents and their specific concerns.
The late 1800’s saw the first of a long list of publications that served the Hoquiam area and Grays Harbor, these papers picked up their numbers in the following decades with the biggest number of gazettes and newspapers being at least 200 in the middle of the 1930’s with the largest number existing during the golden days of the lumber industry in Hoquiam. The papers covered various issues and concerns and the people could not get enough of the editorials and commentaries that gave them insight into issues usually reserved for industry and political leaders.
The Grays Harbor Washingtonian was one such paper that enjoyed the respect and loyal following of much of Grays Harbor residents; other papers such as the Hoquiam American, Grays Harbor Gazette, and Gant’s Sawyer catered to their own loyal following.
Congressman Albert Johnson was one of the first editors of the Grays Harbor Washingtonian and his fiery editorials gave Hoquiam’s residents and large migrant labor force a lot to think and contemplate on. Mister Johnson’s stand on issues such as organized labor and immigrant status bordered on mistrust and hatred while at the same time the same editor championed women’s rights to suffrage.
Aside from defending the rights of others, some Hoquiam newspapers were formed to trample on those same rights with some editors using their papers as a bullhorn for their own discriminations and fears with the same congressman Johnson who supported women’s suffrage publishing the Home Defender that focused on insinuating mistrust and hate against immigrants and labor activist.
The Hoquiam newspapers like the “Washie” was continuously used as a mouthpiece for anti organized labor tirades and were also utilized as jumping boards by editors who also had political ambitions. The papers were not only informing the public about relevant events but also continuously feeding the readers with different sentiments that touched on their livelihood and or emotional sentiments regarding certain issues.
One good thing about the big number or variation of publications available there was a good availability of dissenting opinions and information that was made available to the reading public and thus were not really handicapped in trying to understand or absorbed relevant and accurate information about certain issues, but of course it was up to the reader themselves if they were not going be satisfied with what they read with one newspaper unless what they were reading was what they wanted to believe in the first place.

The people of Hoquiam always valued their rights to expression and information like any other American citizen and during the earlier part of the 19th century Hoquiam and the Grays Harbor area was experiencing its own share of controversial events that affected a large number of its residents and non-residents who were part of its industry and indirectly also part of the community. The various papers served their purposes well, feeding information whether in an objective manner or not, a prime example of which was the Washingtonian still contributed to how the people perceived the truth about their community.
